On the occasion of the 3rd International Day of the Girl, this year dedicated to the empowerment of girls and the end of the vicious circle of violence, Plan International France organized with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Development (MAEDI), a conference debate on gender-based violence in schools (VGMS).

PROBLEM AND OBJECTIVE OF THE CONFERENCE-DEBATE

The objective of this event was to mobilize and sensitize actors and political leaders on the issue of SRGBV, which represents a major obstacle to the achievement of universal schooling and the right to education of girls.

This event brought together more than a hundred participants, including the Director-General of UNESCO, the Director of UNGEI, the African Ministers of Education of Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire and Guinea as well as that UNICEF and civil society actors such as Plan International Togo and the International Center for Research on Women, around the question: How to make the school and its surroundings safe and conducive to the promotion of gender equality, where girls and boys can “learn without fear”?

SUBMISSION OF PLAN INTERNATIONAL RECOMMENDATIONS IN THE FIGHT AGAINST SRGBV

On this occasion, Ms. Annick Girardin, the Secretary of State for Development and Francophonie, as well as Ms. Irina Bokova, Director-General of UNESCO, were presented with the report of Plan International France Victims of the school – Les gender-based violence in schools, obstacles to the right of girls and boys to education. This report brings together good practices and detailed recommendations for governments and cooperation actors. (Attached is the electronic version)

THE CALL FOR JOINT MOBILIZATION OF MAEDI AND PLAN INTERNATIONAL FRANCE

At the end of this conference debate, Plan International France and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Development announced their final declaration, sharing their recommendations to put an end to this violence.
